Semester VII · Credits: Theory-03, Practicals-01 · F.M. = 75 (Theory 40 + Practical 20 + IA 15) · IA: attendance 05 + class test/assignment 05 + sessional viva 05 · Theory: 45 hours · Objective: in-depth understanding of electricity, magnetism & waves and problem solving.

Electrostatics (i) 3 h

Electrostatic field, electric flux, Gauss's theorem; applications: point charge, infinite line charge, uniformly charged spherical shell & solid sphere, plane charged sheet, charged conductor.

Electrostatics (ii) 3 h

Electric potential as line integral of field; potential of point charge, dipole, shell, solid sphere; calculation of field from potential.

Electrostatics (iii) 3 h

Capacitance: isolated sphere, parallel-plate, spherical, cylindrical condenser; energy per unit volume; dielectric, polarization, displacement vector; Gauss in dielectrics; capacitor filled with dielectric.

Magnetostatics 4 h

Biot–Savart & applications (straight conductor, circular coil, solenoid); divergence & curl of B; magnetic vector potential; Ampère's circuital law.

Electromagnetic Induction 3 h

Faraday's laws, Lenz's law, self & mutual inductance, L of single coil, M of two coils; energy stored in magnetic field.

Maxwell's Equation 5 h

Continuity equation, displacement current, Maxwell's equations, Poynting vector, energy density, EM wave propagation in vacuum & isotropic dielectric, transverse nature, polarization.

Collinear SHM superposition 2 h

Linearity & superposition; equal frequencies; different frequencies (beats).

Perpendicular SHM superposition 3 h

Graphical & analytical methods; Lissajous figures & uses.

Wave Optics 2 h

EM nature of light; wavefront; Huygens' principle.

Interference 7 h

Division of amplitude & wavefront; YDSE; Lloyd's mirror; Fresnel biprism; Stokes' treatment; thin films (parallel & wedge); Haidinger & Fizeau fringes; Newton's rings.

Diffraction 5 h

Fresnel: half-period zones, zone plate, straight edge/slit/wire. Fraunhofer: single slit, double slit, multiple slits & grating.

Polarization — h

Transverse nature; plane polarized light — production & analysis; circular & elliptical polarization.
